If troubling feelings pain, fear, worry, mourning, depression and others cannot be shared, they may become unbearable. If you are to become able to tolerate this pain on your own, it really can help to talk and share with another person who is able to bear it 'with' you.
Frequently though, a relative or friend, in a well-meaning attempt to prevent further suffering, unwittingly interferes with this necessary process. It is often the sharing of the experience in the presence of a professional, who is trained to listen with empathy and who knows how to respond, which best promotes healing.
We specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders. We also know how to help if you are undergoing mourning or grief or are experiencing depression, especially if the latter results from trauma or loss.
Our professional experience along with accepted research has shown that the most effective treatment for these problems is one which focuses on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Within the context of CBT however, we design a treatment especially for each person by taking the various aspects of that persons life into account.
CBT can teach you to react differently to situations and to physical sensations which may now trigger distressing feelings or symptoms. You will also learn to understand how your thought patterns contribute to these disturbing sensations and how you might change these thoughts to prevent symptoms from recurring.
We combine this awareness with a variety of behavioral techniques to help relieve suffering. The goal is to diminish symptoms so that life is more comfortable and manageable. In addition, although you will learn how to manage life-interfering anxiety and depression treatment is usually short-term.
Although in-person therapy is usually the modality of choice, we also offer telephone counseling as an important treatment adjunct for those of you who travel on business, have a busy schedule or are homebound.
CBT works for most people. Improvement usually in about six to eight sessions. In some cases, because medication can enhance the effectiveness of psychotherapy your therapist may discuss with you the desirability of referring you to a physician for a medication evaluation.
