A panic attack is the activation of the body's protective mechanisms the so-called "fight or flight" reaction. Panic is an adaptive response in the presence of a real danger; it prepares you to take action. However, if you mistakenly interpret the situation to be dangerous when it is not, a panic reaction can be extremely frightening and ultimately disabling.
You may worry excessively about having future attacks, developing, in essence, a fear of the fear. Life may become focused on avoiding situations that are feared to trigger another attack. You may cling to "safe" territory or the company of a trusted relative or friend. Other symptoms may develop as well.
