Social anxiety is a persistent, irrational fear of those situations which may expose you to the potential scrutiny of other people. You may become anxious or paralyzed by the prospect of being judged, embarrassed or ridiculed by strangers, colleagues or even friends or family.
In order to protect yourself from the extreme anxiety and possible panic associated with certain social or work situations, you may expend considerable energy avoiding these feared situations. As with panic disorder, avoidance may come to dominate and limit your life.
